Don and Mimi Galvin's dream of raising a picture-perfect family on Hidden Valley Road in Colorado Springs is thwarted as their eldest son, Donald, begins to act strangely. What starts as sibling rivalry and bullying develops into a series of bizarre, unexplainable rituals. When Don and Mimi discover the horrific truth, they strive to keep it a secret. But as Donald descends into psychosis, his delusions erupt into uncontainable violence.
After Donald is released from the Colorado State Mental Hospital, things start to deteriorate. While Don Sr. and Mimi battle to keep the family reputation intact, their son's sudden outbursts of violence and psychotic behavior lead to many of his siblings wanting to leave home. Michael rebels against his parents' authority and embraces the lifestyle of a hippy; Brian's dream of becoming a famous rock star ends in tragedy while living with his girlfriend in California.
In the aftermath of Brian's suicide, the reality of what is happening takes its toll on the family. Don Sr. suffers a stroke, and 14-year-old Peter has a psychotic breakdown. As the house falls into chaos, Mary seeks refuge with her brother, Jim and his wife, Kathy. But behind closed doors, a family secret will force Mary into an unthinkable situation. She must decide whether to stay at home with her sick brothers or suffer sexual abuse at the hands of Jim.
While scientists and researchers use the Galvins' DNA to try and find a cure for the disease, the impact on the lives of the healthy siblings is apparent. Mimi's death leads to a rift within the family, with Mary accusing her siblings of abandoning their schizophrenic brothers. But her past trauma and her passion to care for Donald, Peter and Matthew reignite a new nightmare when Mary's own children are left fearing for their sanity.
