About this Movie
Siren: The Voices of Shelley Beattie (with ASL)
Featuring American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation. Academy Award® winner Marlee Matlin explores the story of bodybuilder Shelley Beattie – a fellow Deaf woman whose life felt eerily like her own. To excavate Beattie's extraordinary story, Matlin sought out acclaimed documentary filmmaker Irene Taylor (HBO's Trees and Other Entanglements) and, together, they trace Beattie's early challenges with deafness in a family that struggled to understand her. The film details Beattie's journey to become a top international bodybuilder in the 1990s – starring as the character "Siren" on TV's American Gladiators and breaking barriers in sports, media, and mental health awareness all before her death at 39 years old. Utilizing a wealth of archival footage, home video, intimate interviews, and Beattie's striking personal artwork, Siren: The Voices of Shelley Beattie explores the parallels between two legendary women in a haunting portrait of strength, beauty, and resiliency.
