Step by Step

Grace and Jonathan Fraser are living an idyllic life on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. In preparation for a fundraiser at their son Henry's private school, Grace co-chairs the school's auction committee and notes the other mothers' prickly treatment of Elena, a young mom who's new to the group. Later, Grace is blindsided by news of a tragedy within the school community.

As Grace struggles to reach Jonathan, she finds herself on the receiving end of detectives Mendoza and O’Rourke's questions about the violent death they're investigating. Later, Grace's father insists she and Henry seek refuge at his house outside of the city.

Jonathan resurfaces as Grace learns about his recent troubles at work. Later, Grace facilitates an emotional reunion between Henry and his father and finds herself being followed by someone close to Elena.

Attorney Haley Fitzgerald begins to shape the narrative of the case and looks into Grace and Jonathan's pasts. Meanwhile, Franklin leverages his resources to help Grace and, later, defends Henry in the face of heightening tensions at school.

On the first day of the trial, prosecutor Catherine Stamper presents the overwhelming physical evidence, while Haley questions whether Detective Mendoza pursued all possible leads. Later, Henry is forced to divulge a secret he's been keeping from his mother.

Haley walks an ethical tightrope in her defense strategy. As the courtroom theater mounts, Grace takes measures to protect herself and her family.
