I never said that it "bothered" me. I just thought it was amusing that Lucy Lawless could not see what was right in front of her but perhaps that IS the reason. She was too close to realize. Early on she may have thought of Xena and Gabrielle's relationship as that of an older sister/ younger sister, mentor/student, even mother and daughter. I will admit that I did not really see it the first time around until the later seasons but this time (several years later) it just seems so instantly obvious to me that it was more than that. In the time since the series ended I suppose I have become "desensitized". This was a "groundbreaking " show in several areas and many others probably have it to thank for that.
I know different cultures have their own lines regarding affection and physicality between the sexes. I do wonder how much Xena taking place for the most part in Greece had in the writing of the series regarding the two female leads. The Sappho episode was the most blatant "tip-off" for anyone who hadn't realized yet (Lucy) but it was one of the last episodes. See 9 other replies
