Maybe it's just because I'm a child of the 80s, but I remember Thursday nights at 8 being family time with the Simpsons. When they changed to Sunday, my family changed our routine so we'd still be able to gather 'round to enjoy Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie. I've simply grown up with the SImpsons, and can't imagine them NOT being on television. There's a reason why The Simpsons is the longest running sitcom ever, and it's because it's simply the best.... sure, just like SNL and other TV staples, the show has had its ups and downs, but on the whole, only a show that is truly great could sustain itself after 400+ episodes and 21 years. The Simpsons are as American as apple pie, and I will proudly devote an entire shelf of my DVD collection to all ___ seasons once the show is, in fact, over.
The SImpsons is, without a doubt, the best show on television. :-)
