I just recently learned about Lincoln Heights by watching the Mo'Nique show on BET. Sorry to say it but so often, the networks do not do a great job of PR for some really fantastic shows and before it even gets off the ground, the show is cancelled. Thanks to Hulu, I was able to go back and delve into each episode and found out the the young college kids at my son's dorm even gather around to watch this program. I like the story lines, I like the idea of them having real everyday people starring in the roles. The mom Niki Micheaux is a lovely black woman, however, she isn't too glammed up to be believable. The values set by this family are relevant and even though the show covers a variety of violent situations, there seems to be a balance that mimics what I am sure exists in many many neighborhoods across america. I was just beginning to question why Sutton felt the need to be the hero in every episode...and then I came across the episode previewing his fight with his inner demons regarding his mom's violent death and how he felt helpless in saving her. This is one of the best series (Family drama) that I have seen in a long long time and it is a shame that I can not find it here in my locale. Castle airs on Monday nights right after Dancing With The Stars! I don't see a listing! This is particularly frustrating to me because I support and love most of ABC's programming from Heroes, to DWTS,20/20,Nightline,Inside Edition,Grey's Anatomy,Flash Forward etc. this is how black programming loses its ratings and eventually good shows get bumped off the air. Thanks Hulu for making this show available to me via the web! Much appreciated.
I couldn't agree more with Peter Skinner's comment..."this is perhaps one of the most natural and realistic shows I've seen in a good long time. I think it handles the subject matter in a way that is insightful without being one sided. You get the drama only from the point of view of those living through it and not some deeply moving liberal or conservative slant.
Yes... there are strong African American men and women who live life to the best of their ability. And I am grateful to see such a show that presents people... just people being people without all the hoopla."
As for the interracial content, it is being explored on a totally new level and I think that too has been done tastefully. I think it is very difficult for many to watch an interracial couple thrive and survive when the female is black and the male is white. We still have a long ways to go as far as how we view what is acceptable/tolerable in this country. If we can get with the gay storyline in brothers and sisters (which is also a favorite show of mine) then we should certainly be able to understand that interracial couples are everywhere now and many look just like Cassie & Charles.
Great show ABC!
