The funny thing is, online viewership is much easier to get numbers for. On an actual TV, the only way you count in the ratings is if you have a Nielsen box connected to your TV. The number of Nielsen ratings viewers is only about 1% of total viewers, and with such a small sample, it would be easy for the numbers to get skewed. With an online viewing site like Hulu, or even an on-demand system for cable, you could track every time a show was viewed. Collecting demographic information might be harder to substantiate, though. Claiming to be a young woman makes your vote count far more than that of a middle-aged man, for example, when it comes to advertising. It's sexist, but advertisers expect young women to be the most likely to spend freely (waste money). That's why social drama full of people being petty sells far better than anything remotely Sci-Fi related.
