I have all the books that have been translated into English. This series DOES follow the storyline to the letter (almost literally). There are some minor differences, but they don't have any great impact on the story. That being said I -have- kinda spoiled this series for myself, but for me that makes it much more enjoyable.

yep yep, zach is right on......new manga gets released to this day....the story has not ended. The story from the original Anime is very distorted and they left a lot and I mean A LOT of stuff out. A lot of fans of that series complained about how it left you hanging at the end so then came the movie "secret of shambala" ( I think thats what it was called) and that left the storie a little bit better ENDED......but the fact of the matter is the real story has yet to be told and goes beyond that. Brotherhood is it. Its right on point as far as the manga story. I cant wait to see whats going to be animated 30 episodes from now........it will get very very deep.
