Well I quoted the ACORN story as an example of everyone EXCEPT Fox News omitting, not just facts, but the entire story from their headlines.I agree that critical thinking is vital to a democracy. I just see very little of it on both sides of the spectrum. Which is why I place myself firmly in Libertarian (specifically Objectivist) camp. In the game to decide if we are controlled by religion or the government (or our neighbors), I choose not to play :)   See 41 other replies

Oh, no, you can't take Jon Stewart & the Daily Show at face-value, nor would they expect you to. They're a comedy show. They're using the exact same rhetorical and creative editing tricks other (supposedly legitimate) news outlets are using. The difference is, they're doing it for entertainment purposes and then turning around to say "See what we did there? Wasn't that funny? You should think critically when you see this done on other (supposedly serious) shows."That's what it's about, really. It's about cultivating a sense of media literacy and a capacity for critical thinking. Regardless of what "side of the aisle" someone happens to support, as long as they are doing all they can to dig for information and make up their own minds then that's good for this nation as a democracy. I happen to disagree with you (vehemently) about Fox News being "the most accurate TV news today." I've seen some distortions and blatant omissions that would make most folks' heads spin. However, if you're seeking out other sources and arriving at your own conclusions then I can't fault you for having your own opinion.   See 41 other replies

I base that by being in the north east where I am surrounded by liberals on a daily basis. This includes co-workers, fellow gamers, friends, family, girlfriend's family, etc. etc. etc.So is my evaluation scientifically accurate? No of course not. Is it a good indication of a trend? Seems to be.No I'm not doing the same thing, because like you, I check all of them out. Like when Fox was reporting on the ACORN fiasco, I checked out CNN and MSNBC...not one mention of it. And I do that with most big news stories. I don't take Jon Stewart's or David Letterman's word for it like most liberals seem to.That said, good for you that you do your own research. You are more thoughtful than most. Truth be told, I have my problems with Fox News too (sides with religion in most stories), but point for point, they are FAR and away the most accurate TV news today.   See 41 other replies

Of course I know what he meant. I was just joking around. Though, now that you mention it, you've touched on the exact point I was trying to get at through my attempt at humor. How do you (or Chris) really KNOW that most Liberals "just pick up on the Fox bashing from fellow Liberals"? Was there a survey? Was there a poll? Was there a study of some kind? Did you personally ask hundreds of Liberals if they actually watch Fox News and compare a statistically significant sample to come to your conclusion? Or are you just making that assumption based on what you've heard from other Conservatives? If that's the case, aren't you doing the exact same thing you claim they're doing and criticizing them for?Also, just as an FYI... I personally watch every news program I criticize. That way I know exactly what there is to be critical of and why. Now, I may not sit and watch FOX 24/7. I've got other things to do, other news to watch and other news to read... but if I'm going to criticize something or make a specific point I'll do my homework before I open my mouth to make my argument.   See 41 other replies

You know what he meant. Fox News show. And yes, most critics of Fox have never even turned it on. They just pick up on the Fox bashing from fellow liberals and other media. Most people (liberals AND conservatives) don't think for themselves...they just regurgitate their party's talking points like they came up with it on their own, whether it's actually true or not.   See 41 other replies
