Carnie:
I was so sad about the state of Carnie's family. Even though Carnie is busy with touring, it does appear that she tries to be involved when she is at home. But, clearly she relies on "the help" too much. Her oldest daughter seems closer to her "aunt" (translation: nanny) than her own parents. Plus, how is it that she has 2 housekeepers, but her house is still a mess?
Still, that wasn't the worst part. What was most depressing was the lack of love and involvement of her husband. I get that he works from home, so you can't fault him for being in his studio for much of the day. But, he was totally absent from the family.
Tracey:
Tracey's family, on the other, hand was refreshing because both parents were very involved in the family. And, Tracey and Roby were totally devoted to each other. However, there was still sadness there for me (although, not nearly as much as I felt with Carnie). They are WAY too controlling. It was sad to see Sage, a 14-year-old boy, resisting having fun so much.
Plus, I really found it hard to stomach Tracey's judgement of Carnie when, in 2004, Tracey rolled her SUV with her husband and 3 of her sons in it, because she was drunk. Although, I do give Tracey a lot of credit for getting her life together....still, "People in glass houses..." and all. And, to be fair Tracey, she did her best to share her opinions without being judgmental.
