Charlestown Project 2014: 35 Years of This Old House

In celebration of 35 years of This Old House, this season begins in Boston's oldest neighborhood, Charlestown. Our new project is part of a cluster of 1850s-era Greek Revival houses tucked into the backside of Bunker Hill.
Episode 2

Charlestown Project 2014: Brick Rowhouse Blues

Tom's builds a structural wall inbound of the brick, lashes the brick to the structure and parges the whole thing. Richard shows the result of two weeks of rough plumbing. Norm shows how the roof has been under-structured since it was originally built.

Charlestown Project 2014: A Bridge to Charlestown

We'll replace the failing roof, and also to build the dormer, if city approval comes. Tom will modify the old chimney and shows the framing progress, including the new bump out for the breakfast area. The third floor master suite is all framed up.

Charlestown Project 2014: Wood and Water

At the Charlestown Navy Yard we see the last wooden whaling ship in the world. Tom shows the progress on the dormer. Mark McCullough installs a reclaimed brick veneer on the new kitchen bump out. Kevin drops in to see kitchen designer Kathy Marshall.

Roger visits the Sullivan Square Community Garden. Richard works with fireplace expert John Sullivan. Norm and Tom add some subtle Greek Revival details to the interior window trim package. Roger visits the hidden gardens of Beacon Hill.

Charlestown Project 2014: Kitchens and Baths

Tom gets ready to install a new four-panel front door with glass transom and sidelights in traditional Greek Revival style. Tom and Kevin install new wood wainscoting. Norm learns about Charlestown's ancient past. Mark Ferrante tiles a wall insert.

Charlestown Project 2014: Rowhouse, Lighthouse

Tom builds a hidden door to the basement. Danny Puccio shows Kevin the new Carrara marble island top. Fence contractor Mark Bushway installs a new PVC fence on top of the retaining wall. Richard shows one of Boston's iconic lighthouses.

The exterior is restored. Greg Smizer test-drives the new internet-based security/music/window system. Richard shows induction cooking technology, and the mechanical room. Kevin checks out Angela's new outdoor kitchen.

This Old House kicks off an addition to a 1966 Colonial Revival in historic Lexington, Mass. Homeowners Jeremy and Jody Kieval would like a curb appeal makeover that includes more sunlight, a big new farmer's porch and a dream kitchen.

Lexington Project 2015: Footings & Framing

Kevin discusses This Old House's history renovating Colonials. Kevin visits a concrete shop in Amesbury to see them make the prefabricated concrete footings needed. Norm explains the framing of the first floor platform. Roger starts layout and excavation.

Lexington Project 2015: Colonial Curb Appeal

Kevin finds the front gable wall of the second floor up, and the roof framing underway. Tom installs a 24-foot long LVL to temporarily hold up the second floor. Tom shows Kevin the framing of our new farmer's porch.

Lexington Project 2015: Smart Solutions

Norm visits where Paul Revere stopped to warn John Hancock and Samuel Adams of the advancing British during the the American Revolution. Kevin shows the new architectural shingles. Tom shows the progress on the new back deck.

Lexington Project 2015: Making Connections

Roger shows how the small stream in the backyard affects all other areas of the yard. Tom and Kevin cut away a five-foot section of wall to connect the new kitchen to the old great room. Richard shows two common rough plumbing conditions in the kitchen.

Lexington Project 2015: Exterior Details

Tom the new mudroom door and clapboards. Kevin meets electrician Allen Gallant and inspector Alix Berube to see what goes into a rough electrical inspection. Tom shows Kevin how he's using a hybrid railing system that has cedar posts and railing caps.

Norm and Tom install reinforced fiberglass columns to support the new farmer's porch. Richard sees what he's looking at for a rough plumbing inspection. Kevin and Tom do rough mechanical and framing inspections. Tom shows Kevin the storm window system.

Lexington Project 2015: Conservation Concerns

Mike Vidulich installs a one-piece covered gutter that should never have to be cleaned. Roger shows the native plants he's using to turn a patch of lawn back to nature. Allen Gallant shows Kevin the existing aluminum wiring in the old part of the house.

Lexington Project 2015: Old to New

Norm recaps progress on mudroom and kitchen. Mark Ferrante installs a porcelain floor tile made to look like wood. Allen Gallant shows how to properly abandon an old electrical box. Kevin shows how to patch huge holes where the old recessed lights were.

Lexington Project 2015: Designer Details

Kevin finds the second floor sanded, stained and sealed. Tom starts turning the bleached red oak floors to a dark walnut color. The kitchen cabinets are mostly installed. Kevin meets designer Robin Gannon to see her modern and eclectic style.

Roger starts the new bluestone front walk. Mark Ferrante installs porcelain tile made to look like slate on the porch. Kevin recaps the vanity project and meets Richard to see the sink and faucet set. Roger visits a stone salvage yard.

Lexington Project 2015: Mudroom, Ventilation, Kids' Rooms

Allen Gallant shows new LED ribbon strip lights. Norm and Tom build a new mudroom storage system. Richard and Tom review the critical need for ventilation in super insulated buildings. Mark Pehrson shows his technique for applying wallpaper to a ceiling.

Lexington Project 2015: Finishing Details

Roger and landscape designer Tim Lee place the first new plants. Richard uses two kinds of radiators to bring heat to the garage and the upstairs sitting room. Bob Young shows Norm the new insulated steel garage doors.

Roger installs a new variety of tall fescue which needs less water and fertilizer. Kevin shows final plumbing inspection. Robin Gannon's design for the great room entertainment center. Allen Gallant and inspector Alix Berube do electrical inspection.
