A Ho-Hum House On the Charles River

This Old House opens a brand new season by helping this year’s homeowners, the Sharma family, renovate their 1940s house on Boston's Charles River. All building regulations and challenges will be met and overcome as the home receives a full makeover.

Regulations and Challenges

Landscape contractor Roger Cook removes overgrown plants in front of the house to make way for the new foundation. Meanwhile, general contractor Tom Silva begins demolition and excavation to make way for the new addition.
Episode 3

Bringing in the Structure

General contractor Tom Silva gets to work installing a 17-foot-long steel beam, which will carry the load of the house while work is being done to the foundation. Master carpenter Norm Abram oversees installation of insulated concrete forms for the walls.

Fixes, Framing, and Floods

With most of the demolition completed, general contractor Tom Silva works on the kitchen floor while master carpenter Norm Abram begins framing the interior walls. Host Kevin O’Connor welcomes a pest control expert to address the house’s termite issue.

Master carpenter Norm Abram meets homeowner Allison Sharma to review progress and see the new front entry and framed-up kitchen. At the garage, he helps general contractor Tom Silva turn the flat roof into a pitched roof.

Plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey finishes installing the radiant heat system. Meanwhile, the crew pours all of the concrete required on the basement level and, host Kevin O’Connor tours a tile showroom with homeowner, Allison Sharma.

Shingles, Ductwork, Lights, and a Pocket Door

Halfway through the project, master carpenter Norm Abram and general contractor Tom Silva install shingles out front. Plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey installs ductwork in the basement and host Kevin O’Connor oversees electrical work.

Stucco, Kitchen Design, Roof, and Insulation

General contractor Tom Silva installs an acrylic stucco system to the exterior basement wall while Chris Kimball of America’s Test Kitchen inspects the layout of our house’s new kitchen. Tom works on the pitched roof and interior insulation begins.

Auburndale: Landscape Decisions and a Duck Tour

Host Kevin O'Connor meets landscape designer Jen Nawada Evans to see her plan for opening up the front yard while also creating perennial beds that can be added to over time.

Host Kevin O'Connor arrives to find landscape contractor Roger Cook overseeing the crew that is setting the footings for the new pergola, while also preparing to give the concrete stoop a makeover.

Out back, general contractor Tom Silva lays down the new deck. Inside, master carpenter Norm Abram inspects the painting process and, later, tours the paint factory. Then, Tom modifies the new fireplace mantel in the living room.

Out front, landscape contractor Roger Cook begins to install a new fieldstone walkway. In the kitchen, general contractor Tom Silva assembles the new island while tile is laid down in the bathroom. Later, Tom oversees the installation of a pair of doors.

Front Yard Transformation

Out front, the crew installs the new custom pergola for the entryway. General contractor Tom Silva modifies the main staircase, while landscape contractor Roger Cook preps the yard for a 12-foot tall birch tree. Later, Tom installs the basement floor.

Systems, Security and Surfaces Take Shape

It’s a busy day on the job site as the project nears its deadline. Security systems, countertops and closet systems are installed, while plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey explains his energy efficient A/C and hot water systems.

Transformation Complete!

In the final episode of the Auburndale project, electrical installation is finished, plumbing work is wrapped up, the exterior landscape is showcased and the crewmembers tour the renovated house in preparation for the wrap party.

TOH Goes Hollywood, Almost

The This Old House crew travels to California for their first renovation project in the Los Angeles area. Master carpenter Norm Abram and host Kevin O’Connor arrive at the 1933 Spanish Colonial Revival project house in the neighborhood of Silver Lake.

At the project house, host Kevin O’Connor sees the results of the demolition as well as the new foundation form for the new addition. Plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey gets to work in the basement.

Los Angeles: Roof Tiles & Richard's Water Story

Host Kevin O'Connor arrives at the house to find the new clay roof tiles on site as well as the custom windows and doors. They meet the strict California energy codes, with a combination of tempered glass and low-E coatings.

Secrets of Silver Lake

At the project house master carpenter Norm Abram oversees the process of replicating archways throughout the home as well as installation of the new stucco system outside. Insulation and wallboard are installed as well.yup

It Never Rains in California?

Host Kevin O’Connor oversees installation of a custom plaster system throughout the house, while master carpenter Norm Abram tours the shop where our cabinets are being made. Kevin learns that, due to damage from rain, the roof will have to be replaced.

Spanish Style: Stucco, Ornamental Iron, Hand Glazed Tile

The final steps of the stucco installation are completed as host Kevin O’Connor travels to Orange County to tour an ironwork shop. Master carpenter Norm Abram tours a tile facility to see the production of our project tiles.

Kevin Goes Hollywood

Host Kevin O’Connor gets a VIP tour of the iconic “Hollywood” sign. At the project house, the new red oak flooring is put in, while the crew installs the new terrace out back. Kevin tours a nearby home renovation to observe the landscape.

Spanish Plaster, Soapstone, and a Star

Host Kevin O’Connor oversees more plasterwork as plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey installs a sink on the first floor. Master carpenter Norm Abram observes the new countertops, while an ornamental iron balcony is installed out back.

More Spanish Style

Host Kevin O’Connor observes the progress of the exterior landscape and shops for edging material. Then, he tours a well-known Spanish Style home nearby. Back at the house, a new garage door is installed along with new ornamental front gates.

Los Angeles: So Long to Silver Lake

Work on the Los Angeles project wraps up with the finishing touches both outside and in. Plaster specialist Alfonso Garcia replicates the original "cake frosting" plaster detail on the walls.
