With a fire in his belly to bring soul music to Dublin, Jimmy Rabbitte (Robert Arkin) decides to comb the bars and local pubs for the best soul musicians he can find. Striking out amongst his friends and acquaintances, Rabbitte decides to hold auditions. Deco (Andrew Strong) shows up. An alcoholic streetcar conductor with a chip on his shoulder, Deco nevertheless possesses the vocal skills of a blue-eyed Otis Redding. Rabbitte immediately signs him up. Next to impress Jimmy is Joey Fagan (Johnny Murphy), a horn player who has an encyclopedic knowledge of soul music. Jimmy rounds out the band with the fiery and offbeat Imelda (Angeline Ball) and the enigmatic Steve Clifford (Michael Aherne). The band quickly becomes a sensation in Dublin and beyond. The film ends with the band signing their first record contract, leaving audiences hungering for the end of their story. Based on the novel by Roddy Doyle, The Commitments starred unknowns who were cast in a manner extremely similar to the audition process depicted in the film. The film was such a hit, with an extremely successful hit album, that the performers reassembled and went out on tour.
