This Laurel and Hardy lark finds Stan and Ollie working as janitors for a detective agency. Hoping to transcend their menial occupations, the pair successfully pose as super-sleuths and are hired on an assignment to protect inventor Alva P. Hartley (Arthur Space). Stan and Ollie, along with their many possessions, move into Hartley’s house of gadgets, only to be immediately challenged by two house mates: Egbert, the inventor’s bratty son (Robert Blake), and the many-times-married Aunt Sophie (Esther Howard). More trouble arises when the next-door neighbors — Charlton (Frank Fenton), Hartman (James Bush), Dutchy (Phil Van Zandt), and Mayme (Veda Ann Borg) — are introduced and it becomes clear that their intentions are far less than neighborly; they are, in fact, crooks. The safekeeping of Hartley’s latest invention, a super-bomb labeled “The Big Noise,” is placed in the hands of Stan and Ollie and they high-end it to Washington, D.C. just a moment ahead of the neighbors-turned-criminals. The safety of the two seems ensured as they fly away in an airplane, only to discover they are in the line of fire of the Army’s target practice. Stan and Ollie’s well-being — and the well-being of the country at large — is heroically secured when the two use the bomb to blow-up an enemy submarine.
