JOHNNY DANGEROUSLY turns the gangster genre on its comedic ear in the same way Airplane! did to disaster films. Directed by Amy Heckerling, JOHNNY DANGEROUSLY provides a riotous mix of sight gags and spoofing along with a stellar cast. Set in the 1930s, Michael Keaton stars in the title role as a tough-talking pet store owner with a checkered past. He recounts his life of crime to a would-be young thief. Johnny remembers his days as a youth, as he was forced into a life of crime to save his ailing mother, played by Maureen Stapleton. He begins working for a crime boss, Dundee, and climbs his way up the gangster hierarchy, all the while hiding his ill-doings from his mother and brother, Tommy (Griffin Dunne). Johnny gets promoted and falls in love with Lil (Marilu Henner). Life is on the up and up until he deals with Danny Vermin, a rival gangster played by Joe Piscopo. Things go from bad to worse when Tommy becomes a prosecutor for the D.A. and comes after Johnny. Through hilarious mishaps and shenanigans, Johnny works out a scheme to get out of the crime business and reunite his family.
