Based on a New Yorker article, BIGGER THAN LIFE stars James Mason as Ed Avery, a relatively harmless teacher and father who has been suffering from excruciating pain and fainting spells. When Avery visits the hospital, doctors tell him that he has a rare inflammation of the arteries and only has a few months to live. The doctors prescribe a revolutionary treatment involving cortisone, a hormone of which side effects have yet to be determined. Avery agrees to undergo the treatment and makes a miraculous recovery. He must continue to take the cortisone to prevent a relapse of his condition. The longer he takes the hormone, the more he abuses it. The side effects soon become apparent. Avery begins to have violent mood swings as the drug transforms him from a docile man into a psychotic, murderous one. Walter Matthau co-stars as a family friend who leads Avery down the road to recovery. BIGGER THAN LIFE is somewhat avant-garde because the subject of drugs and addiction were seldom dealt with on the big screen. It is a powerful, voyeuristic look into the home of a typical American family.
