Halloween viewing in a video on-demand world
Circa-2006: It’s one week before Halloween and you’re frantically searching through your TV Guide for the spooky episode of your favorite TV series. You spent last Friday night at the neighborhood movie theater catching Paranormal Activity – the latest horror flick to hit the big screen. And then something almost-paranormal happens in 2007, streaming video on-demand arrives allowing viewers to tune-in to their favorite scary movies or Halloween-inspired TV episode when they want it, wherever they want to watch and for as long as they choose.
The evolution of television has impacted consumer behavior and viewing habits around Halloween ever since. In a recent Hulu Insights survey, we found that a majority of respondents would prefer to stay in and stream their favorite TV show on Halloween.
But, if you’re among the minority who plan to partake in festivities outside of your living room, here are the top three TV-show inspired costumes this Huluween season to get your creative juices flowing:
Today’s on-demand universe offers more than just a single casket full of content to sink your fangs into – it offers films, TV shows and all the classics you need to get into the Huluween spirit. And TV lovers everywhere are taking note. Eighty-six percent of Hulu fans say they prefer watching horror-flicks in the comfort of their home to a movie theater experience. So it comes as no surprise that 81% prefer tuning in via screaming services, on-demand to live TV for scary movies.
Whether it’s a new horror-flick, a movie that still manages to give you nightmares, or a horror-inspired TV series, the old-adage that there’s “safety in numbers” rings true no matter who you are, as 65% of respondents say they’re most likely to want to watch with a comfort-buddy. And, if you’re between the ages of 18-34, then your need for a pal may be more pronounced, as nearly 75% of respondents in this age group say they are more likely to watch scary movies with someone else.
However, it seems scary movies lose their bite with age: the older you get, the more horror films you watch, and the less likely you are to check under the bed or lock the front door after watching.
We already know that moods influence our TV selections thanks to Hulu’s Dynamics of Choice research, in fact six out of ten shows watched after an intense episode of The Handmaids Tale were comedies. But what about on Halloween? Sixty-two percent of respondents identified as needing to watch something funny or lighthearted after a horror flick or scary TV show. And while South Park and Family Guy were among the top comedic palate cleansers on Hulu for both men and women, we found that comedy in particular over indexes among men with shows like Brooklyn Nine-Nine, SNL, and The Simpsons topping their list, while women turn to shows featuring strong female leads.
