My name is Bryce McGuire.
I wrote and directed this little film about three years ago. When I watch the ending of this movie, it still makes me smile. But maybe for different reasons than you. I remember how hard it was to get these wonderful, untrained actors to kiss. When they found out the girl ran and hid herself in your mothers skirt hiding. She was crying.
One of my favorite sequences that we shot was actually cut from this final edit. It was a baptism scene, photographed in black and white film and filmed in a muddy farm pond with our brave friends and family members as unclothes congregants. I never had the heart to tell them that their hours of standing in cold, mucky water didn't make it into the final version. They had to see it for themselves.
The last night of shooting was on location at a beautiful garden space, that we dressed with lights and party-goers. That scene was the end of a twenty-two hour shooting day. By the time we wrapped, no one was any good. We were all falling apart, debating about the similarities between sleep deprivation and intoxication and wondering whether we are safe to drive back to base camp. I remember personally trying to hide a prop cake in the forest because I wouldn't imagine walking the extra yards the the trash can. It is a strange dream to remember.
What makes me smile is that even the lightest of movies requires sacrifice and commitment. This is the grand illusion. This is the fantasy that draws us out of the stalks of our daily lives.
Thanks for coming with me on this little detour through an imagination that I hope isn't far removed from all of us.
Cheers,
Bryce McGuire
