The survivors brought onto the ship were in "Shelters". I don't know what post WW III bomb shelters built under the threat of alien invasion are like, but I don't think it's to much of a stretch to think they could be able to survive the vacume of space.

The flight deck has artificial gravity. Even if it didn't The way they take off is fine. Although the veritechs have scramjets, and are capable of VTOL in space, their take off would be slow and lumbering. See 2 other replies

Well, if nothing else, maybe the catapult launches allowed them to take off with better speed? Maneuvering thrusters wouldn't allow them to take off very fast, making them an easy target, but, then again, maybe we're reading too much into it. See 2 other replies

This is one thing the animators messed-up on. They're in space, with artificial gravity wells the only thing keeping them down on the decks. Why they'd have to go through the trouble of
1 - Moving-up the planes on the elevators,
2 - Lining them-up on the [unused steam] catapult lanes, and
3 - "Shooting them off" one by one as if they were at sea
is beyond me. They wouldn't even need to run their engines to take-off. Could even be as easy as getting them top-side, turn off the gravity and off they float on maneuvering thrusters, turning on their engines for impulse boosts around the ship so they can do their CAP.

Then again, they wouldn't have been able to have been drawn with too much "sense" back then. Wouldn't want an accusation of, say, plagiarizing Battle Star Galactica's Viper-style launches, now would they?

yeah "milkshake" would be a good metaphor for the whole thing. every man, woman, and child would have exploded instantly when the fold drive moved the entire island out into an intrasolar orbit around pluto. and for that matter you can't be "near an orbit of pluto" - you have to be on one or tangent to one with velocity too high to be captured.
