Perhaps the saddest thing about Michael's death is the way everyone stepped up in support of him AFTER his death. The last several years of his life, probably dating back to the Pepsi ad incident, has been nothing but a freakshow for media to exploit. Despite his acquittal of molestation charges that were based more on the fact that he's weird, and less on actual facts, television and other media continued to presume his guilt. Disney dropped Captain Eo like a bad habit when the accusations and trials got heated. In an episode of Kyle XY one of the characters makes the comment, in reference to her babysitting ability, "It's not like I left him alone with Michael Jackson".
So now that he's dead, everyone steps out of the closet to profess their love and respect for him. Larry King can't seem to do a show without asking his guests what they think about Michael Jackson. A movie is made. And yes, Disney even considered bringing back Captain Eo due to popular demand. Much like they probably dropped it in the first place due to popular demand. I'm quite sure if they thought there was long term profit involved they would do it, but they're smart enough to know that this post death hype will eventually end and people will gravitate back to all the negative stuff eventually.
I guess my point is that many people out there are nothing more than slaves to hype. For a while it was pretty popular to say bad things about Michael Jackson, and now that he's dead it's just as cool to tell everyone what a big fan you are. It's much like the post 911 over patriotism that resulted in the importation of a nauseating number of chinese made US flags into the country. My friend coined the term, "flaggets", to describe these idiots that flew their flags for no other reason except that it was the popular thing to do at that moment.
Based on the timing, this film is an exploitation of Michael Jackson's death much more than a celebration of his life. All I can say is that I wish that he had even half as many friends, fans, and supporters while he was alive as he has in death.
