Riveting. Astonishing. Glowing. Mischa Barton and Sam Rockwell played a fascinating duet as an over-sheltered, precocious and odd little girl, fearless in the face of death but in need of a big brother's camaraderie; and a struggling young man in need of some kindness and lightness in life.
Reminded me of "Boxful of Moonbeams" and "Of Mice and Men." I definitely would have felt good about laying out a chunk of change at a theater to see this. Satirical, funny, shocking, frustrating, sad, joyous. Social class commentary; a warning about guns and children; questions about what is really "normal," and what constitutes justice; a reminder that violence begets violence; and a window into a cold empty plastic fraud of a life, compared to a real and warm but desperate life...with a strange classic (Russian) fairytale theme and feel through it all, and a good soundtrack.
I know how it turns out now, but I might watch it again in a while.
