I'm not Jewish. I didn't know what I expected from this movie but I'll tell you what I received. The story of this young aspiring champion would have been so typical it would have been cliche 75 years ago. But today people have more choices and there are many avenues out of a bad situation, right?
This movie highlights among other things that these stories are not relics of the past. They are not stories for your grandfather to bring out on quite Sunday afternoons. The stories are real and present today.
Poverty does not discriminate. The great thing about this kid is he has that great work ethic that so many first/second generation immigrants have. That desire to "do good" and not have all the sacrifices go to naught.
Although, I'm not jewish or even religious I can recognize and admire Dimitri's conviction and perseverance.
Very early in the movie you realize that outside of his obvious boxing skills his other talent is in surrounding himself with great people that have his best interest at heart. I mean I REALLY like this kid and wish him the best.
