Is the director being cheeky and ironic? This film has some of the most hackneyed dialogue I've ever heard in a film, so much so that I wonder if the director wasn't attempting some sort of convention-mocking satire, a la A History of Violence. If so, then the bit with the pillow feathers and the closing scene with the candles and "the look" were somewhat clever.
If not, then they were just inane scenes, and this is yet another film in which the screenwriter incorrectly assumed that constant pontification was commensurate to wit and insight. Either way, this film isn't worth the bother. Two stars because at least the cast was competent -- the lead was annoying, but I don't think anyone could have delivered those lines without seeming ridiculous.
