The presentation of the material's a little slapdash, and there's an over-reliance on visual effects (which are really cheezy). The narrator's voice is irritating, and the pacing is very slow. If you can get past those flaws, the argument is essentially the same as "Before the Music Dies" - the idea that genuine innovation in popular music comes from outside the music industry because the music industry is structured in such a way that it is actually anti-innovation. The difference between "Mixtape" and "Before the Music Dies" is that the former focuses on the hiphop and rap genres, whereas the latter seems to focus mostly on post-punk and alternative genres. If you're interested in the nuts and bolts of the entertainment industry and especially music, you should watch both films.

Its a great documentary, yeah I agree with the others, the white dude got a raw deal....

I agree with most people when they say that this documentary is too long.
Mostly it was cool and interesting, especially the white guy who was prosecuted cause he actually had a story (by story I mean a beginning, middle, and an end) to tell.
The only thing I really didn't like was how this documentary claimed to be objective at the beginning, it's obviously one sided, they should have been forward about it.

I can't get past the voice of the narrator. Creepy sounding dude.

For all of those that talk smack on this documentary. Which would you prefer. A movie by the main stream, by a disconnected probably white dude seeing a void to be filled. I have to admit it does need another commentator ....he has no energy and is flat.... But at least there is something out there so that every child that doesn't know hip hop history. Which has been told through word of mouth and by yr old head uncle or aunt. Now the visual is here! As a child of hip hop this is needed. Any aspect of hip hop told and wriiten by black peoples that MADE it, live it , and breath it . Nothing is lost in translation. Point blank if you don't like it, make a film about it yrself. It what was said was wrong, right it. If the visuals were weak make yr own and make it better. This is basically ment to me to inspire you to learn, investigate and tell yr story about hip hop! Better than some true hood bad camera, horrible editing and fifth graderish drawings. Hell at least someone made a movie about it. What you gonna do...now that something is out, rip on it to death! The graphics and visuals are nice i don't know what ya'll used to watchin!
