Hakushin is scarier-looking than any of the demons! And the practice of self-mummification isn't something Takahashi made up. The show (and manga) is absolutely laden with and inspired by Japanese religion and legends (some of it very loosely adapted, of course.) Unfortunately, the story is hampered by Jakotsu--one of the more blatant "evil gays" stereotypes around. I've read that he was originally meant to be a female character, but the creator didn't want Inuyasha to punch a woman...but really? He's fought other women before. And the things that Jakotsu does and his mannerisms would come off vastly different (and far less stereotypical...maybe.) for a female character.
