Right off the bat I'll tell you: you can skip from 5:45 to 9:15. Nothing happens except the astronaut crew walks through the desert. They don't even come across a rattlesnake... maybe they have to endure a slight breeze. The producers were just filling time. No wonder the kiddies were bored.
There are good and bad things to say about this show. I'll start with the good since, even though I can't really recommend this show to other viewers, I do enjoy it and have watched some episodes more than once.
The drawing on this show is fantastic. The characters are very good, and the backgrounds are fantastic. The overall look is what brings me back to what is generally a poor production; it really has a great feel. The drawing is up to par with a high-quality comic book of the 70's.
The music is also very good, although apparently only a few cues were written, and re-used over and over. But, the same could be said for the music on the original Star Trek series.
What's bad, among other things, is the animation. You get a lot of still images that are just panned & scanned, a lot of figures in shadow (which eliminates the need to animate detailed drawings), and a lot of closeups (which reduces the number of features onscreen that require animation). There is even a montage sequence, which is just a series of still drawings. One reviewer below mentioned that he enjoys this series more by adjusting his expectations: He sees this as a normal comic book, but with sound. That's a great suggestion.
The worst thing about this episode is that they stretch about 5 minutes of story out to 25 minutes. As I mentioned before, there is about 3 1/2 minutes where absolutely nothing happens. The dialog is very simplistic as well. There was also an animated Star Trek series during this time, which also featured poor animation (and pretty bland drawing overall), but which is still a great series due to the high quality of the stories. We can accept poor animation if the story is good; those of us who were kids in the 70's just accepted that, overall, saturday morning animation wasn't going to be on a par with Disney, or the classic era of Warner Brothers or the Fleischers.
If you're a fan of quality drawing, then you might enjoy this show. If you need more than that, move on to something else.
