It's meant to be shocking,it's called satire. Nothing should be off-limits to satire. You like Chappelle Show, Daily Show, and old-school Sat Nght. Live? They all take subjects that are delicate and surrounded with fear and make them funny. It's a safe way to look at the way we deal with uncomfortable things which is usually repression. Their making fun of us, not the victims.

It applied cold logic, completely devoid of morals, that mirrored the Industrial Revolution that caused it. He was writing to the upper class in hopes they would see the absurdity of it. He held up a mirror in hopes they didn't like what they saw.
