A strict interpretation of the Bible might lead you to that conclusion, but all the anthropological and historical evidence suggests otherwise.

They weren't really after the grapes. Leif used "Vinland" to entice new settlers much as his father used "Greenland". The most valuable raw material to the settlements on Greenland was WOOD and the documentary does mention that there were regular expeditions to North America to collect timber. There is archaeological evidence of trade between the Norse and the "Skraelings" or Native Americans, but it pales in comparison to the contact period trade in the New England Colonies. I think this reflects the Vikings' approach to colonization, which was based more on conquest than, for instance, the later English, Dutch, or French colonists. There is no evidence that grapes were ever harvested for commercial trade. Even if they had been, it would have been more difficult to procure the grapes from the New World than simply trading through established Germanic networks. Besides, have you ever had Concord Grape Wine? It's awful, but that's just my opinion.

I enjoyed this immensely, would like to see a series done on the vikings and the norse, I have been a fan my entire life and believe people should be better educated on the subject!!!
I thougt is was good but I would have like it more if they had desribed in great depth the religion of vikings like the gods Odin, Thor , Frey, and Loki also more about Fenrir and the Midgard Serpent.
