I think Roland makes good products and their Vdrum line is the best in the industry... I have played and owned several electronic drum kits and I have even built my own.
But let's be real. Vdrum modules are not yet creating realistic sounds across for even the typical drum set instruments (bass, snare, toms, cymbals, cowbell, tambourine, etc). Better sounds are produced by software synthesizers that have actual recorded samples and not "modeled" sounds.
It is also not true that "it's pretty much what everybody uses for recording these days." The vast majority of studio productions use traditional equipment. That's not likely to change either. Technological breakthroughs making buying studio-quality digital recording interfaces and editing software affordable for even hobbyists. It's cheaper, more flexible, and achieves superior results to invest in an interface, recording/editing software and a few decent microphones... than to spend $2-4K on a Vdrum set up that you'll end up converting to MIDI anyway.
Again... Roland is the leader in this field, but there is a loooonng way to go to catch up to the sound of a well-tuned acoustic drum set.
