I watched this more out of curiosity than real interest, and was surprised by how good it was. Argento takes many Hitchcock movies, mostly "Strangers on a Train" and "Rear Window," and weaves pieces of them into this well-written thriller. Like most Argento movies, the dialogue is spoken in English translated directly from an Italian script, so sometimes it seems stilted, but the pace of the film and the way one can see the actors "think" are very Hitchcockian. Like DePalma, Argento includes more sex than Hitchcock ever did in this tribute, but he uses the sex to magnify the sense of the hero's gulit, fascination and attraction like Hitchcock did, unlike DePalma who only used it to titillate. The deaths are gory, as one would expect from Argento, but the rest of the film follows the hero on his journey as he becomes obsessed with a pair of women whom he is convinced are recreating "Strangers On a Train" in real life. The pace may be a little slow for those who are used to modern American cinema, but for those with a taste for classic Hitchcock or Euro cinema, this will be a fun treat.
