Hi Mr. Mcdaniel,

The character's name is Negi, which is Japanese for "leek", a.k.a. "Welsh onion". This is in reference to his ethnic background: He's from Wales.
I think it's also his father' allusion to how Evangeline was captured, he captured her physically in a pit, then controlled her magical powers by dousing her in garlic bulbs and leeks.

A "nagi" is a magical serpent. Lots of Burmese and Thai stories about nagi. I don't think it's so common in Japanese folk tales.

So glad they gave up the kawaii style; this version has a lot more interesting background and visual effects, without getting ultraviolent or sexual, which makes me turn away from most anime.
Although, if I hadn't seen the first attempt, I doubt I would understand what's going on and the characters' relationships. But it's only the second episode, so maybe I'm jumping the gun.
