There were any number of schlockmiesters pumping out Z-grade drive-in fair in Ed's day, and no one feels compelled to dig into their psyche.
Then again, his loony dialogue and the insertion of his own obsessions into his scripts tends to leave even the most casual observer feeling less pandered to, than a participant in a somewhat seedy exhibitionist exercise.
What seems to set him apart, was that he really cared for and believed in what he was doing, when for all the others, it was just a business.
At least he was fairly harmless.
If the guy who made "Saw" was doing his thing in his back yard with his friends, I'm sure he'd get some recognition.
