If one looks through british/irish literary works, references abound starting with James Joyce's Ulysses. Look at beckett, flann o'brien and even Wiliam Trevor. Essentially, I think, the way jonathan lethem does, the europeans realize its all been done. Almost every european sitcom abounds in intertextuality. However, it's done properly, unlike family guy, where the references are jammed into a show.by not drawing attention to the references, this and most simon pegg work basically just rocks. I hope he and nick frost make more movies....A better comic duo? At the moment the only people who come close are david mitchell and robert webb, I'd even say they're better... But i think they work in the short form great, and I somehow wouldn't expect them to make great movies. Whereas simon pegg and nick frost, when it comes to movies--I want them to have my children.
