The appeal and inspiration of this cleverly animated series is, of course, primarily the signature voice characterization of Inspector Gadget by Don Adams of the "Get Smart" series, with all its James Bond-like inventions and secret hideouts, with a silly twist. The Inspector here was modeled after Don Adams' bumbling but lovable Agent 86 of "Get Smart." The gadgets that may or may not work as expected, which pop out of the mechanized cartoon version of the character, make the animated series even more fun. The synthesized scores and sound effects are extra-cheesy, but some of the gags are so tongue-in-cheek cute, it's worth paying attention. Where else are you going to find a secret agent dog disguised as a penguin, jumping off a ski gondola into the snow--and all the while, still pretending to read a newspaper? (Well, OK, Nick Park's "Gromit" is a brilliant dog, too, but you get the idea.) It's a fun series, and you should watch it, whether you're a little kid or a grown-up kid.
