Scar hates the Amestrian military and the alchemist that used thier power to destroy his country. He doesn't claim hatred toward alchemy in general just the national alchemist. Remember he was willing to let Al go earlier when he had Ed pinned down. I think of scar as not much more than a little boy how had his lunch money stolen and now has the power to take vengance against his former oppressors. He is short sighted and very narrow minded. I am more interested in knowing what happens once he achieves his revenge. What will he do to himself, when the time comes to judge him.

I'm not so sure Spencer. Sure it is some sort of vengeance, but I also believe that Scar, as an Ishvalrian, monk does have some hatred towards those that use alchemy, albeit, he doesn't seem to hold ill will towards mei (may) who uses Xing Alchemy so I'm no sure if it's just Alchemy in general the Ishvalrians hate or just Amestrian alchemy...That is something to ponder. He is vengeance driven, but it's not the complete reason, I think.

Like he said, its the half that deconstructs things. He received his arm from his brother and his 'holy crusade' is to bring the alchemists who killed his people to some sort of judgment according to his god, Ishval. His chosen path, however meaningful to the Ishvalans, is just being carried out in the name of Ishval so he can have a reason to back up his actions. This crusade is nothing more than a personal quest for vengeance against those who killed his family.

That was the explanation given in the last series, but I don't think it's likely to be the same in this iteration of the story. In the manga the tattoo was part of a hybrid style of alchemy created by Scar's brother after studying the alchemy of the neighboring country, Xing. Scar isn't stopping after decomposition because he lacks the knowledge to continue, but because he only has half of the array; the right arm's tattoos control decomposition and the left arm, which Scar doesn't have, controls reconstitution. His crazy speed comes from a lifetime of rigorous training in the Ishvalan martial art style.
