Um. Actually it's based off the events that took place in South Africa during the apartheid; specifically in a residential area of Cape Town named District Six. Because, you know, this is takes place in South Africa and is directed by a man who grew up in South Africa.

For all those thinking it's about illegal immigration, think again. It's actually a metaphor dealing with Apartheid and the slum life that plagued Black South Africans.

The movie is an extended version of Alive in Joburg - made by the same writer and director.

plus, the aliens in both movies don't want to stay on Earth. Instead, they'd rather be free and go back home, instead they are forced into "homelands" or restricted areas aka District 9, just like many Zulus who were forced off they land and onto "homelands" during Apartheid.

The action looks enjoyable even though I'm so sick of sci-fi parables - ooh illegal immigration aren't we witty how we made the aliens the mexicans? it's just so stupid, the whole thing. The whole format. News reporters so casually talking about aliens like that. Either way the action and the special fx look more fun and it looks more quirky than most of these.

I really think this movie has got some really cool visual effects!! It also has an awesome storyline, I mean who wouldn't want to see a movie about an alien race forced to live in a slum town in South Africa, this movie is gonna rock your socks off. It's also rated R which means no more crappy alien movies and good old fashioned slimy alien guts and some humans' getting Analy probed, JK!!!! I give it 10 niblets out of ten!

The first trailer I saw had me interested. I'm worried now that it'll be another mindless action movie just filled with gunfights and explosions. I hope I'm wrong though.
