That was my sense -- that it was a replay of the scene where she thought she was abandoned by Mike. Her character isn't real well drawn beyond the context of the immediate scenes of the movie, nor is her past history, but it is as easy to imagine that she didn't abandon her child or her new friend as to suppose that she did. To me, it would depend upon why she left her town and parents at the beginning of the movie, what she is in search of. If she wants to drift, without ties, she will leave and go from man to man indefinitely, and the child will be only a fleeting thought she has now and then. But if she is running away from a bad situation at home that caused her to change her name from Jane to Dee, then perhaps she is capable of loyalty to her child and her friend and will value his loyalty to her -- and if she longs for adventure, he will probably take off with her since she's asked him to.   See 3 other replies
