Leon, we wanted to reply to your comment, so we asked Craig Sholley of the AWF (the guide in the film) to weigh in on the matter. He was not surprised that you would question the percentage of relatedness between gorillas and humans. Here is his response:It’s a controversial subject and depending upon which reference you cite, DNA similarities between man and the great apes range from 97 to 99%. Most authorities agree that the common chimpanzee is most related to man. As I recall, I think I mentioned on the trip with Charlie that the shared DNA content between man and most of the great apes was as high as 98.6%; hence, the title of the film.We hope this helps clear up the source of the title. We do recognize that there might be discrepancies in the percentage and nature of the genetic similarities.- explore
