I've seen this over many times and have some observations to share...
First the interview guy is very good, although he carefully tries to trigger Michael's responses with questions that integrate Michael's songs... things that mention say "... don't you want to be left alone..." which reminds me of "Leave Me Alone", very clever.
Michael's answers are so positive throughout. Especially when the interviewer asks about if Mike has felt he's lost out on experiences as a child and MJ's reply is "yes, but I've also gained alot.". That always strikes me as so honest and so positive. He answered from the gut, nothing scripted or prepared before.
His answer about his song Man In The Mirror was also very good. He went into all that stuff about changing yourself before changing others or really, change starts with you. Very deep stuff.
Which leads me to my last observation, that I think MJ's interest in human anatomy ie - The Elephant Man, world relations, social issues whether starving children in Africa or urban thuggery in the USA's inner city, has to do with Michael wanting more out of his life.
Its like he had a desire for knowledge, for furthering his knowledge, even say, education, but he couldn't do it because he was a "pop" star. He couldn't go to college.
Here, in this '88 interview, he's at that age where you start to desire more than what you have, like he's looking for meaning and purpose, thats what his humanitarian and even interest in animals and what others perceive as oddities is about.
Its a slight lesson on how sometimes the media distorts some one's motivations, or interests and twists them up and in doing so, destroys positive perceptions. I always say about real great musicians, that the truth is in their music.
I think you can say this about many other legends.
I hope HULU never takes this down, thanks for sharing it with us!
