A very funny movie!
Stanley Donen made some off key choices, but I never saw the original version; maybe he was trying to fit some things in that weren't original ideas.
Cast is fine. Caine is very good at comedy, the rest all do their jobs.
The lead girl is a twit, but I think every part of that was intentional by the actor and the director, and the writer.
The script is written by the genius Larry Gelbart. Many good punch lines. Modern comedies have abandoned the punch line, mainly because guys like Gelbart were old in the '80's and there are none left (he started in radio). As a point of style, this film is a throwback. The sanitized, sparkling, and vibrant Rio De Janiero they present is more like a Bob Hope travel picture from the '50's.
Speaking of Gelbart, he does take a painful situation and make us laugh at it. I know that I wouldn't be laughing if my best friend slept with my daughter. But you want to know something-it happens. So what are you going to do about it? Hate and kill? If you compare it to his script for "Oh, God!" it makes sense, too. If God appeared to you and started talking to you- would that be funny? Most people that happens to go insane, and kill people. But it could be funny, if you have the right perspective. Gelbart's scripts are much deeper than most people give credit for, because it is comedy. In this movie, the ending becomes poignant, because they all start being honest with each other. There is some great writing in there.
This was a big R rated hit when released, due to Siskel and Ebert giving it a thumbs up. You don't see Demi Moore's breasts, for all the horndogs who check it out for that. In fact, when her and Michelle turn away from the food stand on the beach, Demi's hair which has been strategically placed to cover her own breasts, blows aside a moment- and I saw a flesh colored pastie. Common Demi! Where's the method acting when you need it ? Good movie, I say. By Hulu standards, this is freakin' "Citizen Kane". (thank you Hulu, no hard feelings)
