The storyline amazes me as a student trained in 'the west.' We are taught here that a story must have a protagonist and an antagonist. This usual formula pits two sides against each other where we are allowed to identify with one en route to destroy the other that is revealed to be of lesser character according to his actions. The story arc in Slam Dunk shatters that presumption in that here we have the main protagonist, Shohoku, observing two of their rivals matching strengths. Neither is portrayed as malicious or degenerate. Ultimately, the pillars of each team match up and are left with a mutual respect and appreciation for the others desire and skill. What a great way to see not only competitive sport, but also the world.
