People ought not to get their shorts in a bunch sorting out the political aspects of the story.(Though it is interesting - see the 38:00 minute mark - that the film was released in 1969 and Nixon's "ping-pong" diplomatic move didnt' take place until the 70's.)

the geography and portrayal of China is inaccurate (Chinese temples/palaces near the Russian border?), but the Hong Kong enacted portrayal of the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution Red Guard 红卫兵 is interesting. Needless to say, however, the Red Guard was allowed to destroy much of everyday China, but things considered valuable such as scientific research were protected, often by the People's Liberation Army. Altogether, it's an interesting sketch.

Again, like Night People not a great Peck movie, but a good one. Last 10 minutes of the movie would have been better implied, rather than shown. This movie appears to be from '69 or '70 and includes moral debates typical of that era.
Both Peck's and Arthur Hill's acting seemed a little stiff,(I blame the Director) - nonetheless, worth watching.

...but not quite as entertaining. I suspect hollywoody portrayal of China is as accurate as in any James Bond movies.

The technology angle isn't totally absurd; some of it is possible today and maybe all of it in 20 more years, so they weren't reaching too far for a spy movie. We can allow that dramatic license.But there's just too many scenes of people sitting around debating philosophies.
I can't believe he fell for the old complimentary-hooker-in-his-hotel-room trick.I also thought they made Mao's wart too big. Maybe it was that big in real life but in his pictures it looks small and that's what we recognize.

I liked how it showed that individuals in China/USA governments BOTH can be evil (as opposed to most 50's propaganda movies), anyone paying attention to the world should realize this is the nature of government (Power corrupts, and concentrating more power into the hands of a few leaders brings you closer to absolute corruption). Although they went over-the-top with some stereotypes & some of the acting, it was basically true on a symbolic level.Other individuals, in both the societies, were also shown to have goodness.

To those that viewed this film as political propaganda and utter BS... please don't be afraid to engage your brain. This effort did include some goofy science and outlandish technology, especially for it's time. However, the assertion that it is propagandist is simply simple minded. China, in case you missed the last century, is a communist worker state and tramples wrecklessly on the rights of its' individuals. I saw nothing in this film that would lead me to believe misrepresentation was rampent. The Peoples Republic of China is a sheeet asssss place to be a human being unless you are the Chairman.It was, on the whole, an entertaining junket. Gregory Peck was quite good in his roll as the knowledgable scientist and the film had a certain 70's allure.If you enjoy a military/spy espionage adventure with some future high tech thown in .. then you should give this movie a shot.
