Audi, on par with VW at the time of Rohrl's '82 title, was trying to position itself as a champion of safety, aerodynamism, and technology. The choice of Mouton (when two very capable and aggressive male drivers were also on the team) for a #1 race driver was telling to me. They knew their market. Today, Audi is the car to have, an alternative to MBZ and BMW, if I believe the commercial. Celebs and wannabes want to be seen in it. But it's still, deep down, a car for women. Men and people who actually can drive and enjoy doing it are still, 30 years later, drawn to traditional RWD vehicles that favor talent over technology. I know I am, and I still thank Rohrl for the lesson he gave the world back then. It's not about the gizmos. And you can make a Volvo go fast, but it will still be a Volvo.
