One of the first episodes of Six Feet Under there's a lady who got hit by a bus or something. Anyways, they quite literally rebuild her face... her head is like 70% missing. That's harder than just slathering clay and foundation over a still-shapely yet crispy corpse.

That guy that painted her, in the previous episode, painted her so she looked the same. That makes me think that she does look the same to the undead as she does to the living. If that is the case, then this points out a semi-serious flaw in their logic. But maybe Mason had commited some crime that put him on a wanted list, therefore he had to change his appearance. In any case, they had not mentioned anything such as this up to this point in the series.

Actually, I just think the quite weird character behind the desk is a component of Brian-Fuller-created universes. Compare the mortuary guy in Pushing Daisies. See 3 other replies

See if the time passing thing were true, Mason, who died in '66 (compared to Roxy who died almost 2 decades after he died), would have looked more like himself when he showed George what they looked like to the living.
