Though I agree with the outcome of this case on principle, the argument created on behalf of the geneticist was clearly contrived. Beyond this, however, are principles they are discussing. Commonly, genes are referred to as though they are discrete entities with predictable behavior, and that the activation or deactivation of specific genes directly correlates with the presence of very complicated traits. The reality is that while certain relatively simple characteristics do behave in this way, most that we think of do not. Even with a high correlation between inherited genetic sequences and specific traits or behaviors, there is no certainty.
This was a thought provoking episode but I doubt the thoughts it raised were those that the writer(s) had in mind. For example, the 2 most obvious thoughts it raised for me were:1) A gay lifestyle STILL is not accepted by the majority of the public, even decades into the future.2) If there really was a serious concern that the so-called “gay gene” would be wiped out through genetic testing and so along with it the gay population, it would mean that: a) The “surprisingly high” number/percentage of gays present in our society isn’t even close to the actual number (must be a whole lot FEWER), and,b) Gays would have either lost their right to adopt –or– the vast percentage of gays would ALSO not choose to have a gay child. Well, so much for thought provoking programs! Trying to convince viewers to change their “awful discriminatory thinking” is a gamble. In this case, the writers were playing craps (if you know what I mean.).
The damage should not have been a $1.00. The doctor blatantly violated their trust by breaking their contract (he knew from the get go and he decided to not tell them because HE BELIEVE IT WAS NOT IN THE BEST INTEREST OF THE GAY COMMUNITY-who is he to decide on the parents choice). Only the parent has the right to decide if that society chooses to do genetic testing that involve more than medical information. If that society or the doctor did not like that the Gay population was declining due to perspective parent declining those embryos that are predispose then they should have lobbied their congress to ban genetic testing based on sexual orientation. It was pure laziness and weakness on the doctors’ part to take the route he took. I believe this show did not last because it is too much based on emotion on not the law. And you can always tell who the writers want you to cheer to win. The legal dialogue of the unfavorable side is always lacking and not strong. The writers of this show were not independent thinker, with every episodes you were left with the knowledge that they are more of the liberal mind set (I am not saying that mind set is bad but they need to look at both side of an issue and present strong legal arguments from both sides instead of filling the arguments with emotions). If I knew about this show when it first came out, they would have lost me as a viewer after the first season because it is not challenging or though provoking—it is purely emotional and that gets tiresome(at least to me).I have more but I will stop here.
Tags are user-generated labels related to this video or show that can help you discover related videos on Hulu. Check the tags you feel are most appropriate for this video or add your own (the number in parentheses indicates how many other users have used that tag.)
