I think its the good professor the bad one was weak and afraid to go on the first slide with his team...but this professor shows character and bravery in several situations. I see that no one who commented after me got the point I was making... see since there is hypothetically an inf anent amount of universes (i.e. or ways of perceiving a possible change in the structure or the past tense behavior of a space time plain in a different coordinate of reality which may be visible on the "smallest unit of space/time") remember now, there are coordinates involved in the matter of controlled worm holl creation and travel so that as a traveler goes farther away from his point of origin on the inf anent plains of parallel universe sub stricture: he or she will encounter more radical structure from their own origin's structure when pertaining to matter placement and energy content at a time in question. My problem though is that you need a point of origin to orientate yourself with a sense of direction (I.E. I am going so many units to the right or left). so, hance by question is how dose the device know where ow lets say universe (4712893712, 424324382, 4738274987, 43243244, ...........) At the same it makes me thing that it must be resetting it self to use the current coordinates as the origin every time they "Jump" no matter what it is, but then the question is how fast is it diverging away from the travelers Original Origin or is it actually curving around or some thing eals.... Also remember that a inf anent plain cannot be defined by it's end points (or some thing like that) as a reference... also 2 intersecting plains make a line.. 3 intersecting plains make a point in space... ;-)   See 10 other replies

1) It's a t.v. show.
2) Even though they're not travelling through time or (beyond 400 miles) space, there should be an infinite number of worlds where Earth never formed, the Big Bang never happened, or the Earth formed earlier or later and is in a different point of its revolution. Thus, you would end up in empty space and then die. It doesn't matter that they aren't travelling through time. Also, they aren't sliding to "different realities of the same world", they are sliding to "different realities" period. There is no particular reason that Earth is always there except that it works for the plot.
3) Quinn is a genius and would have thought of the odds of ending up in space. If a genius invents a Sliding device, knows that it is likely to land him somewhere where there is no planet, he would have immediately went to work building a safety into it where the portal would open near the largest mass (i.e. a planet) and specifically within a certain distance of the ground level. It may even check that there is breathable air. We know that it can control the location of the portal relative to the planet, otherwise the 400 mile issue wouldn't work, so it's conceivable that there is one aspect of the timer which keeps them within a certain distance of the ground and another aspect which keeps them in the same physical location. That second part was swapped, and now they only arrive within 400 miles. If the first part is intact, they would always land near the ground (and, if it was somehow calibrated to ground per se, with dirt below and air above, then would never land in the ocean either, or in worlds with no atmosphere). They might still land in a fire world, though. And hey, they did!
