So basically physicists came up with some theories about quantum mechanics. They turned out to be full of holes and problems. In order for their theories to make sense, they invented a particle that "explains everything", and now are spending billions of dollars on a machine to try to find this theoretical particle. The LHC of CERN's is even more expensive and much larger. Well, it will be amusing to look back on this time in a few hundred years when perhaps we have an actual fundamental understanding of how things work at the quantum level. Hopefully it will bear out all this spending to find something that we only just imagined exists.
