In my opinion, the only way the Dark Tower film would work, is if it were done as an epic series. Picture LOTR times three. Additionally, one downside to a great book (or series) being made into a film is that you already have a picture in your minds eye of how everyone and everything looks. Then once you see the film, that visual representation supercedes your own version, for the bad or good.
I wish Abrams good luck, but doubt that he (or anyone for that matter) can pull it off.
