As legend has it, Shlockmeister Producer Director Roger Corman, king of the cheap quickies, had three days left on a contract signed with Boris, and knocked this one out in an evening, with the rest of the crew and the castle rm his previous shoot the week before. Judicious use of stock footage, and ad libs by Jack Nicholson and his wife (!) Sandra Knight, a bravura performance by Dick Miller, a show up by non other than Francis Ford Coppola, and bad guy Leo Gordon as co author, what do you get? About 70 minutes of color photography classic shlock. My cousin begged me to go to the movies to see it, and I begged off much to my dismay. Five years later it was playing on WPIX Channel 11 in NY. Stein's score is above the best, as it is hard to knock period classic music.
Amazingly, Nicholson is interesting, and the doomed charactrers are, well, doomed in the traditional mold. And mold they do.
So sit back with some low cholesterol treat, and clog some arteries watching The Terror. Fine locations make for ready made richness, and are a fine substitute for story.
Enjoy!
