I think the actor plays Ballard as kind of a sad-sack bruiser, a guy who knows he's in way over his head but is to stubborn to admit it. Sometimes he's not convincing, but I generally like the portrayal.The character itself is very interesting. Since Dollhouse is in many ways a deconstruction of one-hour action dramas, the character of Paul Ballard is a deconstruction of the action cop hero. His whole character arc is inverted from the norm.In the first season, not only does he not get the girl, but he gets shot, loses his job, ends up working for his enemy, and worse of all he's forced to confront the ludicrous nature of the get the girl fantasy that completely sours his only remaining motivation. And in an act that can only be described as kicking a guy when he's down, when Ballard actually learns the right lesson (from Patton Oswald's character), and decides to pursue the "real" girl, she turns out to be a doll!I think part of the reason that people don't like Ballard is that he is fundamentally a loser, a real honest to god screw-up who can't do things the right way and thus actually messes everything up. He's the opposite of Bruce Willis' s character from Die Hard, despite being cast from the same mold.   See 31 other replies
