I really am loving this show. It keeps getting better and better. This was such a sad, touching episode! Poor Joan. The end really made me cry, when Martin was comforting her. :-(
I agree with Lois Long and many other posts -- it's fiction...get over it. If these quirky plot twists and odd events didn't happen, we'd have a really boring show to watch.

I think the point of his doing that is to show you how much he loves his aunt. He is doing something that it is very hard for him to do. He does not want her to hurt anymore than she has to. Also if you have lived much in a small town in the US you know that the confidentiality rules are nice and they stop some gossip but they are hardly air tight. As was pointed out in one of the shows just invoking confidentiality, or not answering a question when asked, is often taken to mean something by the nosy.
